Located in the Upper Rhine Plain in southern Hesse, the Hessian Ried is
a flat and fertile landscape between the Rhine River and the Bergstraße hills.
Once a swampy floodplain, it has been transformed into valuable agricultural
land.
The region is known for its rich biodiversity, protected wetlands
like the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue nature reserve, and its critical role in
groundwater supply for large parts of Hesse.
The Ried is ideal for cycling, hiking, and birdwatching, offering a unique mix of nature, water, and open space.
